St Ambrose was known as “The reluctant Bishop” and is the patron Saint of learning. He was one of the most illustrious Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and fitly chosen, together with St. Augustine, St John Chrysostom, & St. Athanasius to uphold the venerable chair of the Prince of the Apostles in the Tribune of St. Peters at Rome. His progress in secular knowledge kept equal pace with his growth in piety
